Government permits 14,447 tonnes of sugar exports to EU, US under TRQ scheme

New Delhi: The government on Wednesday notified sugar exports to US and EU under under the tariff-rate quota (TRQ) scheme.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued a public notice and said, “The quantity of 5841 MT (raw/refined) sugar to be exported to EU and quantity of 8606 MTRV raw cane sugar to be exported to USA under TRQ scheme from October 1, 2022, to September 30, 2023 has been notified.” The quota will be operated by (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) APEDA, stated the DGFT.

TRQ is for a volume of exports that enter at relatively low tariffs. And higher tariffs are imposed after the quota is reached.

The government has allowed sugar exports of six million tonnes for 2022-23 season, and India’s apex sugar body ISMA expressed confidence of getting export nod for additional 3 million tonnes.
