Government plans to expand Digboi refinery

Tinsukia: The government is planning to raise the capacity of Digboi Refinery from 0.65 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) to 1 MMTPA by investing Rs 740 crore, said Rameshwar Teli, Union Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas, reports Sentinel Assam.

Around 27 bighas of land were procured for expansion of the refinery and the foundation laying was planned on April 15 that was slated to be attended by the Prime Minister. However the discrepancy in land acquisition resulted in a delay in work on it and now the project is expected to be commissioned by October 2025, he said.

The Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) will be setting up an ethanol project worth Rs 1,500 crore from bamboo, he said. As many as 12 bamboo chipping units would be set up in upper Assam that would help in increasing its capacity from 3 MMMTPA to 9 MMTPA, he said.
