Government plans to roll out new scheme for payment of cane arrears

New Delhi: The central government is planning to roll out a new scheme that will address the issue of pending cane arrears. The government is planning to force mills to increase deposits with the banks and make provisions for the separate amounts for clearing pending arrears.
Few mills in India already started crushing operations, whereas others will commence soon.

In sugar season 2019-2020, sugar production is likely to fall. Flood and drought situation in Maharashtra will hamper the country’s sugar production calculation. According to the reports, sugar output in the country is forecasted at 28-29 million tonnes. Whereas in season 2018-2019, mills in India produced 33.1 million tonnes of sugar.

The crushing has begun, but the millers are yet to pay the arrears. Sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh owe maximum cane dues around Rs Rs 4000 crore.
