Government ready to avoid shortage of sugar: Bangladesh’s Finance Minister

Finance and Commerce Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed assured on Wednesday that the government will take firm steps to prevent any shortages of sugar and essential goods.

Following a meeting of the Adviser’s Council Committee on Government Purchase held at the Cabinet Division conference room in the Bangladesh Secretariat, Dr Ahmed addressed reporters, stating that necessary measures will be implemented to keep citizens free from concerns about the supply of sugar.

The meeting approved eight procurement proposals, including sugar, soybean oil and chickpeas.

The TCB will acquire 5,000 tonnes of sugar from City Sugar Industries Ltd at a total cost of Tk 604.6 million, or Tk 120.92 per kilogram.

The sugar will be distributed at subsidized rates to assist those in need ahead of Ramadan, the adviser noted.
