Despite having sufficient bagged sugar in the country some sellers have increased the price of packaged sweeteners and we are trying to control this price rise by distributing sugar through the Guyana Marketing Corporation, said President Dr. Irfaan Ali.
Shortage of the commodities is a global issue, he said. Heavy rainfall has affected the domestic sugar market as the rainfall has delayed the harvesting of sugarcane and processing further, said the Head of State. More than 2,000 bags of Sugar have been processed recently at Guyana Sugar Corporation’s (GuySuCo) Uitvlugt estate, he noted.
“We will ensure that Guyana Marketing Corporation increases the distribution of sugar so that prices are not hiked. As per the demand of the market, sugar will be distributed,” President further added.
There is a shortage of packaged sugar in the country but the issue will be resolved within two weeks, said Sasenarine Singh, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), GuySuCo.
Smuggling sugar outside the country is also one of the major reasons apart from bad weather situations, he said.
