Haryana: Advisory issued after fresh insect breeding found in sugarcane fields

Karnal: The threat of top borer insect continues in Haryana after the fresh breeding reported in the sugarcane fields in the region, reports Tribune India.

Eggs and months were found by the scientists of Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Regional Centre Karnal in the fields. During last season, the sugarcane cultivation was affected due to the top borer.

Dr. S K Pandey, head Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Regional Centre, Karnal, said, “During surveys across the region we found eggs and moths in the fields. The presence of the insects and their breeding at this time is dangerous as the cane cultivation activities are underway.”

“The top borer has six stages and at present, it is at the breeding stage. This is the right time to cut the breeding. If breeding is stopped in time, this could help in saving the crop,” he said.

Scientists have issued an advisory to the cane farmers to remain alert and take proper steps to stop the breeding.
