Ambala, Haryana: The protest of the Ambala sugarcane farmers outside the Naraingarh Sugar Mill in Banondi village for pending cane dues around Rs 83.50 crore entered 21st day, reports The Times of India.
As per the media report, the sugar mill based in Shahzadpur block of Haryana state has not cleared the cane dues of the farmers for the 2021-22 season. The dues have been cleared of the farmers that sold cane till January 27, 2022.
The mill operated for 137 days this season. The mill in the 2021-22 season had crushed 46.25 lakh quintal sugarcane, the lowest in the last 23 years. The mill had purchased sugarcane worth Rs 165 crore from cane farmers.
Since March 28, farmers have been protesting against the pending cane dues and they have formed a 21-member committee that represents various farmers’ organizations.
Several meetings have been conducted but the sugar mill management is yet to resolve their demand. The farmers have threatened to intensify their agitation if the government fails to address their demand by April 22.
