Ambala, Haryana: Amidst concerns over outstanding dues and the attachment of assets belonging to Naraingarh Sugar Mills Limited, farmer unions have declared their intention to stage a demonstration outside the Naraingarh Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office on December 27 and 28, reported Tribune India.
The Bhartiya Kisan Union (Shaheed Bhagat Singh) and Samyukta Kisan Mazdoor Inquilab Union have opted to conduct their demonstration at the SDM office, while the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Charuni) has called for a panchayat on January 2 to formulate a strategy ensuring timely payments.
Naraingarh Sugar Mills Limited, operating as a private entity, has been under the supervision of the Haryana government since 2019. BKU (Charuni) chief Gurnam Singh Charuni said: “We have come to know that the property of the sugar mills was attached by a Supreme Court committee. There were no representatives from the farmers in this matter and the farmers have apprehensions that sugarcane dues of the farmers may get stuck. We have decided to hold a panchayat on January 2 at the sugar mills to chalk out a strategy.”
Dharm Vir Dhindsa, leader of Samyukta Kisan Mazdoor Inquilab Union, underscored the seriousness of the property attachment, citing pending sugarcane dues amounting to crores of rupees, including a crop loan taken by the mills in the name of farmers. The farmer unions plan to stage demonstrations on December 27 and 28 to draw attention to the issue.
