Haryana: Farmers demand hike in sugarcane SAP

Karnal: As the sugarcane crushing season will start in the first week of November, the state government has yet to decide regarding the State Advised Price (SAP) for the 2023-24 season, reported Hindustan Times.

Farmers united under the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU Tikait), voiced their concerns in a protest held in Panchkula on Friday. They submitted a memorandum to director agriculture, urging an upward revision of the SAP, which currently stands at ₹372 per quintal.

The delay in announcing the SAP has left farmers in a state of unease, as farmer unions in the state have been advocating for a substantial increase, proposing a revision to ₹450 per quintal. The President of Haryana BKU, Ratan Mann, conveyed their demand for the SAP to be raised to ₹450 per quintal. He added that the director agriculture has assured them that he will bring this matter to the attention of the Chief Minister. Mann also issued a warning, stating that if the government does not address the SAP hike by November 1, the issue will be raised during Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Karnal on November 2.
