Chandigarh: Sugarcane farmers under the banner of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Charuni) protested in different parts of the state over the government not fixing the state-approved price (SAP) for cane even as crushing is underway, reports Hindustan Times.
Farmers protested for two hours, from 11 am to 1 pm, in front of several sugar mills including Naraingarh, Shahabad, Yamunanagar, Karnal, Kaithal, Assandh and Panipat and handed over a memorandum of demands to the mill administration.
BKU’s Tikait faction will organise a similar protest on Thursday over the same demand.
Sugar mills in the state are likely to produce 70 lakh MT sugar as the area under cane cultivation in the state has been reported to be around 90,000 hectares, according to officials.
Farmers have alleged that the state government is not paying attention to the sugarcane farmers and their demands even though the private and cooperative sugar mills have already started crushing operations.
