Haryana: Rain impacts sugarcane crushing operations at sugar mill

Sonipat: Continuous rain over the past two days has disrupted operations at the Sonipat Cooperative Sugar Mill, which had been running at full capacity for several days. The heavy rainfall has prevented farmers from delivering sugarcane to the mill, resulting in a ‘no cane’ situation, reported Dainik Tribune.

The crushing season at the Sonipat sugar mill began on November 25. After an initial slow start, the mill was processing sugarcane at a steady pace. However, rain on Friday and Saturday, followed by overcast weather on Sunday, left farmers unable to cut and clean their sugarcane in the fields. This has led to a halt in supply to the mill.

The mill has been operational for about a month.

The mill administration has agreements with farmers to crush around 32 lakh quintals of sugarcane this season. On average, the mill processes 30 lakh quintals per season.

To ease supply issues, the mill administration had earlier issued advance slips to farmers for delivering sugarcane. However, due to rain over the weekend, many farmers could not use these slips.

In response, the mill has extended the validity of these slips until December 30, allowing farmers to bring their sugarcane at any time before the deadline.

With operations temporarily halted, the mill has begun a cleaning and maintenance drive. Officials said this downtime would also help address any technical faults, ensuring smooth operations once supply resumes.

Farmers have been urged to deliver their crops as soon as possible to resume crushing activities.

D.S. Pehal, Chief Engineer, Sonipat Sugar Mill, said, “Rain has disrupted sugarcane supply, leading to a ‘no cane’ situation at the mill. Operations will resume immediately once sufficient cane is delivered.”
