Yamunanagar: Saraswati Sugar Mill has reduced its target for sugarcane crushing due to a decline in sugarcane acreage within its operating area, this year, reported Amar Ujala.
Compared to last year, sugarcane cultivation is down by 10,452 acres, forcing the mill to lower its crushing goals. This season, the mill has set a target to crush 160 lakh quintals of sugarcane, down from 175 lakh quintals last year. Crushing operations at the mill are set to start on November 12, with preparations already underway.
Farmers from the Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, and Ambala districts supply sugarcane to the mill. A total of 21,147 farmers grow sugarcane across these three districts, with the majority, 18,999, located in Yamunanagar, followed by 1,401 in Ambala, and 747 in Kurukshetra. Recent floods caused crop damage, discouraging many farmers from planting sugarcane. This has resulted in a decrease in acreage of 8,443.38 acres in Yamunanagar, 1,245 acres in Kurukshetra, and 764 acres in Ambala, bringing the total sugarcane area down to 85,638 acres from last year’s 96,090.39 acres.
D.P. Singh, Senior Vice President (Cane) at Saraswati Sugar Mill, stated that the mill will begin operations on November 12 to crush 160 lakh quintals of sugarcane this season. He added that the mill would continue operating as long as the contracted sugarcane remained in the fields, often exceeding the set target due to additional cane supply.
