Haryana: Work is ongoing to develop improved varieties of sugarcane

The 69th cane-crushing season of the Rohtak Cooperative Sugar Mill in Bhali Anandpur village began with Haryana’s Minister for Cooperatives, Prisons, Elections, Heritage, and Tourism, Arvind Sharma promising timely payments to sugarcane farmers.

The minister addressed the event virtually, assuring farmers that payments would be cleared within a week.

The physical inauguration of the crushing season was led by Haryana Sugarfed Chairman Dharambir Singh Dagar, who started the mill’s operations by pressing the boiler button and placing sugarcane onto the conveyor chain. The mill’s Managing Director, Major (retd) Gayatri Ahlawat, and other senior officials were also present.

Addressing the gathering, Dagar emphasised the government’s commitment to supporting farmers. “The government has taken several steps for the benefit of sugarcane farmers. Work is going on to develop improved varieties of sugarcane so that sugarcane producers can get more production and their income can increase,” he said.

He also highlighted that Haryana’s sugarcane rates are the highest in the country, and farmers are receiving timely payments.

Major (retd) Gayatri Ahlawat provided an overview of the mill’s operations, noting that nearly 5,000 farmers from 251 villages across five districts supply sugarcane to the mill.
