Shimla: Around 18.5 lakh ration card holders in Himachal Pradesh are likely to get sugar at low rates as the state is negotiating with Punjab government for procuring sugar. At present Haryana is supplying sugar to HP at Rs 33 per kg and Punjab has shown interest in selling sugar at lower rates than Haryana. A team of Punjab officials visited Shimla and took a review of the sugar supply and the cost of transportation.
The Punjab government will provide Himachal information about the reduction in sugar rates this month. It is believed that the competition in the two states will benefit HP to get sugar at a low rate. Recently during a meeting with chief minister Jai Ram Thakur in Chandigarh, Punjab government has made an offer to the HP government to supply sugar produced from cooperative sugar mills in the state
