IIT-BHU researchers explore ethanol production from potato peel waste

Varanasi: Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-BHU) have developed a method to produce bioethanol using potato peel waste. This initiative not only reduces food waste but also supports India’s efforts to achieve energy independence and protect the environment.

The research was carried out by Dr Abhishek Suresh Dhoble, Assistant Professor at the School of Biochemical Engineering, and M.Tech. Student Unnati Gupta. They are exploring the possibility of using potato peel waste as a feedstock for bioethanol production.

Bioethanol is a renewable fuel that helps reduce the country’s dependence on imported crude oil and promotes cleaner energy options. This method addresses the issue of food waste and provides a sustainable fuel source.

Dr Dhoble said ethanol blending in petrol has increased significantly, and is expected to reach 20% by 2025-26.

The government aims to reduce its annual fossil fuel import bill through such measures.

Dr Dhoble explained that India produces about 56 million tons of potatoes every year. Around 8-10% of these, nearly 5 million tons, are processed into chips, fries, and dried products. However, poor storage, transportation, and handling lead to losses of 20-25%, which amounts to 11-14 million tons.

He said the new method provides a practical and scalable way to boost India’s energy security. By focusing on sustainable bioethanol production, IIT-BHU is contributing to shaping India’s and the world’s energy future.

IIT-BHU Director, Professor Amit Patra, praised Dr. Dhoble and his team for their innovative work. He said the research reflects the institute’s commitment to finding solutions that support global sustainability goals.

He added that the project strengthens IIT-BHU’s role in environmental research and innovation. It not only focuses on clean and sustainable energy but also addresses food waste management, benefiting both the economy and the environment.
