DAR ES SALAAM: Taking steps to keep a check on inflation and make sugar affordable to consumers, Zanzibar authorities in Tanzania have lowered import duty for sugar by 50 per cent, reports Xinhuanet.
Omar Said Shaaban, Zanzibar’s Minister for Trade and Industrial Development has warned the traders that strict action will be initiated against them if they misuse the reduction of import duty to gain in the sugar business.
He said, “We have taken steps to enable consumers to get sugar at an affordable price.”
“We will be monitoring the commodity prices at domestic as well as global markets to ensure that the consumers get sugar at an affordable rate and ensure that traders do not use illegal ways to increase their profits,” Shaaban further added.
