The Indian government has allowed sugar exports to Nepal and Bhutan. The quantity of sugar allowed for export is 25,000 Metric Tons per country. The permission to export has been granted to the National Cooperative Exports Ltd (NCEL).
As per notification released by DFPD, “Committee of Ministers (COM) for reviewing the prices and availability of essential commodities has decided to allow export of Sugar 25,000 MT each through NCEL to Nepal and Bhutan.” It will valid till till September 30, 2024.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) had previously announced that the restrictions on the export of sugar (Raw Sugar, White Sugar, Refined Sugar, and Organic Sugar) have been extended beyond October 31, 2023, until further notice.
The new sugar season of 2023-24 commenced on October 1, 2023, and sugarcane crushing operations have begun in major sugar-producing states.
The government is closely monitoring the domestic sugar demand and supply situation. To keep sugar prices in check, the government has carefully planned the monthly sugar release quota for sugar mills in tranches to meet demand, especially during the festive months.
However, regarding allowing sugar exports in the current season, the Government has maintained a cautious approach, and will continue to review the overall sugar stock availability in the country.
