The Directorate General of Foreign Trade, in July 2021, had allowed the export of specified quantities of various commodities including sugar under the bilateral agreement between India and Maldives for three years until 2023-24.
Recently, the global shortage of sugar has triggered the demand, therefore Indian government took a precautionary step to cap sugar export to 100 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) for the season 2021-22.
