India and the US have committed to advancing sustainable aviation fuel, promoting the electrification of medium and heavy-duty vehicles, and increasing the use of hydrogen in buses, tractors, and heavy equipment, according to a joint statement issued after their Strategic Clean Energy Partnership dialogue.
The statement, released following the Strategic Clean Energy Partnership (SCEP) Ministerial meeting convened by US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Indian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri in Washington DC on Monday, also noted the two nations’ enthusiasm for increased investment in each other’s clean energy markets.
Both countries acknowledged the necessity of a just, orderly, and sustainable energy transition that ensures access to reliable, affordable, and clean energy supplies. They also recognized the vital role of energy trade in supporting their national priorities.
The statement highlighted the need to modernize the power distribution sector to ensure continuous, reliable power for consumers. It also praised support for India’s smart metering initiatives, expanded efforts on inverter-based resources, power market reforms, system inertia estimation, and cybersecurity.
Additionally, the ministers commended the Indian Railways’ efforts to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 and expressed support for India’s first 24×7 renewable energy procurement initiative of over 1.5 GW, along with the development of an energy efficiency policy and action plan for all railway facilities.
The statement emphasized the two countries’ agreement to boost the use of sustainable aviation fuel.
