India Glycols enhances ethanol production capacity

The ethanol industry in India is taking steps to boost production capacity in order to increase biofuel output and achieve the ethanol blending target set by the government.

India Glycols Limited is also enhancing its production capacity to increase ethanol production.

India Glycols Limited has successfully added further capacity of 100 KLPD to the existing Grain Based Distillery at Kashipur (Uttarakhand). With this, the revised enhanced capacity of Grain Based Distillery at Kashipur (Uttarakhand) is 500 KLPD and is commissioned. Company also informed that it has further added capacity of 180 KLPD to the existing Bio-Fuel Ethanol plant (Ethanol to Bio-Fuel conversion) at Kashipur (Uttarakhand). With this, the revised enhanced capacity of Bio-Fuel Ethanol plant (Ethanol to Bio-Fuel conversion) at Kashipur (Uttarakhand) is 590 KLPD and is commissioned.

Company also added 2,500 MT/Year (depending upon the product mix) to the facilities/ project for New Value-Added Chemical products at Kashipur (Uttarakhand). With this, the revised enhanced capacity of facilities/project for New Value-Added Chemical products at Kashipur (Uttarakhand) is 7,500 MT/Year (depending upon the product mix) and is commissioned. The remaining facilities/project is expected to be commissioned by Q1/FY 26

“The work for enhancement of Grain Based Distillery capacity by 180 KLPD and the Bio-Fuel Ethanol plant (Ethanol to Bio-Fuel conversion) by 90 KLPD at Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh) is in progress and the same is expected to be commissioned by Q4/FY25,” India Glycols further added.

The country has set target for a 20 per cent ethanol blending target by 2025. In August, ethanol blending in petrol reached 15.8 percent, and cumulative ethanol blending from November 2023 to August 2024 stood at 13.6 percent.

As per DFPD, India’s ethanol production capacity has risen from 518 crore liters in 2017-18 to an impressive 1,623 crore liters in 2023-24 (As on 31st August 2024), demonstrating the government’s commitment to fostering a greener future.

According to the DFPD, India’s Ethanol Blending Program (EBP) is progressing successfully. States such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Sikkim, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh have exceeded their ethanol production capacities, enhancing not only energy self-sufficiency but also empowering farmers. These states are also assisting smaller states with their ethanol supply needs.
