India has surplus of food crops that can be used for ethanol production: Nitin Gadkari

Surplus food crops in India can be utilized for ethanol production, said Union transport and highway minister Nitin Gadkari stated that the government aims to lower emissions as well as the fuel bill of the country, reports Money Control.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the Moneycontrol Policy Next-The Rs 10 Trillion Infra Push summit in New Delhi.

Addressing the gathering, he said, the surplus of sugar, wheat and corn can be used for ethanol production to achieve the 20% ethanol blending target.

The government has planned to produce ethanol from broken rice, food grains, corn sugarcane juice and molasses as it is the “fuel of the future”, he said.

After achieving 10% ethanol blending in petrol in 2022, India has set a target to achieve 20% blending by 2025.
