India may likely to allow additional sugar exports in January after reviewing local production. According to the news report published in Reuters, Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said that India would consider allowing additional sugar exports in January after assessing local production.
The government in November allowed the export of sugar up to 6 million tonnes for the 2023 sugar season and stated that it would consider further exports after reviewing the sugarcane production in the country.
“Government has protected the interests of sugar mills by allowing exports as they will be able to take advantage of increased prices in the international markets which would ultimately benefit farmers,” said the ministry of consumer affairs, food & public distribution.
Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, the minister of state for consumer affairs, food and public distribution, on December 14, stated that the government is encouraging sugar mills to divert excess sugarcane to ethanol production.
