India recorded warmest February in 124 years, says IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Friday that February 2025 was the hottest February India has recorded since it began maintaining temperature records in 1901.

The department reported a rise of 1.34 degrees Celsius in the country’s average temperature for the month, which increased from the normal 20.70°C to 22.04°C. Additionally, the maximum temperature saw a rise of 1.49°C, climbing from the usual 27.58°C to 29.07°C.

The all-India average minimum temperature stood at 15.02°C, surpassing the normal 13.82°C.

Warmer nights were particularly observed in the northern and northwestern regions, which helped prevent fog formation in the Indo-Gangetic plains.

Looking ahead, the IMD also forecasted above-normal temperatures and a higher number of heatwave days across India between March and May.
