India to export 8,606 tonnes of raw sugar to US under TRQ

Indian government has allowed the export of 8,606 tonnes of raw cane sugar to the United States. The decision has been taken under the tariff-rate quota (TRQ) scheme for the period from October 2024 to September 2025.

Exports under the TRQ scheme benefit from lower customs duties, but once the quota is filled, additional imports are subject to higher tariffs.

In a public notice, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) stated, “The quantity of 8,606 MTRV (metric tonnes raw value) of raw cane sugar to be exported to the USA under the TRQ scheme from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025, has been notified.” A similar quota was announced in January.

India, which is the world’s second-largest producer and the largest consumer of sugar, also has a preferential quota arrangement for sugar exports with the European Union.

The DGFT further noted that the quota will be managed by the Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
