India is witnessing a notable increase in sugar consumption, indicative of rising demand every year within the country. The Department of Food & Public Distribution (DFPD) has stated that annual sugar consumption in India has reached around 290 lakh tonnes (LMT).
Taking to social media, the DFPD emphasized this information, highlighting the substantial annual sugar consumption figure.
In a tweet, the DFPD stated, “India’s sugar consumption reaches around 290 LMT annually, with surplus sugar diverted towards ethanol production, fueling sustainability.”

Interestingly, this season’s sugar production is expected to exceed initial estimates. Consequently, sugar mills are urging the government to lift restrictions on ethanol production and permit additional sugar diversion towards ethanol production.
