INOX Air Products, India’s largest manufacturer of industrial, electronic, and medical gases, has announced the successful commissioning of its first Green Hydrogen manufacturing plant at Asahi India Glass Limited’s (AIS) new float glass facility in Soniyana, Chittorgarh, Rajasthan. AIS, a leading glass manufacturer in India, has signed a 20-year offtake agreement with INOXAP to supply Green Hydrogen to this facility. The plant, powered by solar energy, will produce up to 190 tons of Green Hydrogen per year through the electrolysis process. This marks India’s first use of Green Hydrogen in the float glass manufacturing process, setting the stage for sustainable glass production.
INOXAP is responsible for the design, engineering, installation, operation, and continuous supply of Green Hydrogen to the AIS facility for the next 20 years. In the initial phase, 95 tons per annum (TPA) of Green Hydrogen will be supplied to AIS. As part of the agreement, AIS has also invested in the solar power plant that will provide the renewable energy needed for Green Hydrogen production, which will then be used in AIS’s float glass manufacturing process.
Commenting on the launch of INOXAP’s first Green Hydrogen plant, Siddharth Jain, Managing Director of INOX Air Products, said, “We are thrilled to begin our Green Hydrogen journey with AIS at their Soniyana facility. Our first Green Hydrogen plant is also India’s first for the float glass sector. The confidence that AIS has placed in our capabilities is a testament to our expertise in safety, technology, and project management. It is rewarding to know that our Green Hydrogen supply will significantly reduce CO2 emissions at this facility by approximately 1250 MTPA. Green Hydrogen will be key to India’s energy transition, aiding decarbonization efforts and ensuring a secure energy future for both our country and the planet. We are excited to expand our Green Hydrogen supplies to more industries and businesses seeking to reduce emissions and support India’s goal of reaching net-zero by 2070.”
Rupinder Shelly, COO of Architectural Glass at Asahi India Glass Ltd, added, “We are proud to be the first glass manufacturer in India to use Green Hydrogen in the float glass manufacturing process. With the commissioning of INOXAP’s Green Hydrogen plant at our facility, we have further strengthened our commitment to sustainability. At our Soniyana facility, we aim to meet 94% of our power requirements through green and sustainable energy sources. We will continue to invest in sustainability, circularity, and decarbonization initiatives, such as generating electricity from flue gases before they are released. This pioneering initiative reflects our shared vision for a greener future and reinforces India’s position as a global leader in renewable energy adoption.”
AIS has established a greenfield project in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, for the production of high-quality float glass for automotive and architectural uses, in collaboration with AGC Europe. The partnership with INOX Air Products to set up the Green Hydrogen plant is an integral part of AIS’s broader sustainability strategy, driven by their commitment to reducing the carbon footprint in the glass manufacturing process.
