It is better to plant fresh sugarcanes: Sharad Pawar

Kolhapur: The farming sector has suffered a major blow after heavy rain in Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur, and Solapur districts destroyed the crops. The flood swept away the dreams of farmers to earn well. Now, farmers are trying to back to normalcy post the flood.

The flood had damaged crops on several thousand hectares in the region. Like other crops, excessive waterlogging caused damage to sugarcane. Following which, now NCP urged the government to provide compensation to cane growers.

An NCP delegation, led by Dhananjay Munde and MP Supriya Sule, met Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and demanded a compensation of Rs 1 lakh per hectare for sugarcane. Along with this party also demanded Rs 25,000 per hectare as compensation to once again make agricultural land cultivable.

On 14th August, also party president Sharad Pawar demanded a complete crop loan waiver for agriculturists affected by floods and heavy rains. He also sought for a permanent solution to tackle the flood situation. “Sugarcane crop has completely been damaged, it is better to plant fresh sugarcanes”, Pawar said.

He addressed a gathering at Kavathesar village in Shirol taluka of Kolhapur district, which was severely affected.
