Kallakurichi : Kallakurichi Collector M. S. Prasanth has warned of strict action against private sugar mills that are illegally transporting sugarcane from fields that have been firmly warned on behalf of the Kallakurichi cooperative sugar mill, reports The Hindu.
Although the Collector clarified that the cooperative sugar mill has availability of only 3.25 lakh tonnes of sugarcane for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 crushing seasons, now it has come forth that the private sugar mills have been in active collusion with middlemen to illegally transport both the registered and unregistered sugarcane from these fields that were exclusively meant for the co-operative mill.
District administration bans cane use, by private mills — registered, and unregistered — to ensure availability for the cooperative mills. The Collector would deduct it from the sugar quota if the mills were engaged in criminal activities. In a recently concluded meeting of the collectorate on Tuesday, it had been unanimously decided not to allow any private mills or even the proposed sugar factory to crush canes directly from farmers. The Collector has warned that stringent action is going to be taken against any identified private mill that is found in Uchida from areas reserved for the cooperative mill. He added that all vehicles found indulged in these activities would be confiscated and stated that middlemen are warned that cases would be registered for criminal action against them.
