Karnal Institute develops high-yielding sugarcane variety

Karnal: Scientists associated with the Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Regional Centre here, have come up with a newly developed sugarcane variety Co-15023.

According to the TribuneIndia.com, the variety has been released for commercial cultivation in north west zone, comprising central and western Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Delhi by the Central Sub-Committee for Crop Standards Notification and Release of Variety in a meeting held last month.

The performance of the variety was found extraordinary for juice sucrose content after it was tested at various sugar mill’s premises and fields through the All-India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP).

During trials, it was found the variety was improved to 9.12 % from 5.92% than other varieties in 8 months. Besides, it improved to 7.93 per cent from 5.78 per cent during 10 months.

“We expect the variety will play a major role in the development and growth of the sugar sector in the country. Also, it would increase the income of the farmers with high yield,” said Dr. Bakshi Ram, director, Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore.
