Karnal sugar mill earns additional income by selling electricity

Karnal: Karnal Cooperative Sugar Mill has emerged as a model for other mills in the state. By paying the farmers their due on time for the sugarcane supplied, it has occupied the top position in the state and earned additional revenue worth crores from sugarcane waste. This success has made the sugar mill the first cooperative unit to turn a profit, and the management is enthusiastic about it.

The mill’s Managing Director, Hitendra Kumar, stated that the synergy between the sugar mill and farmers has enabled timely payments to sugarcane farmers, who in turn fully cooperate with the mill. As a result, the sugar mill is setting new benchmarks in various fields. He mentioned that out of the 18 megawatts of electricity produced, 5 to 6 megawatts are used internally, while the remaining power is supplied to the Haryana Power Purchase Centre (HPPC). By supplying electricity to the Haryana Electricity Purchase Centre during the current crushing season, the mill has generated an additional income of ₹25 crore.

The mill has also increased its crushing capacity from 2,200 tons of sugarcane per day to 3,500 TCD. The MD highlighted that due to technical efficiency, increased crushing capacity, and timely payments to farmers, Karnal has won numerous awards at both the state and national levels.
