Karnataka: Farmers threaten to stage protest over sugarcane price

Mysuru, Karnataka: Farmers have threatened to launch an indefinite stir from November 9, 2023 in Mysuru to demand a higher price for sugarcane, reported The Hindu.

The decision was taken at a meeting of different farmers’ organizations on Sunday. Kurubur Shanthakumar, president of the Karnataka State Sugarcane Cultivators Association, said that the indefinite stir will be held in front of the residence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

The farmers are demanding an additional ₹150 per tonne of sugarcane procured last year and an upward revision in the procurement price for this year. They say that the cultivation cost of sugarcane has increased to ₹3,580 per tonne, while the procurement rate fixed by the government is ₹3,150 per tonne.

The farmers are also demanding a 10-hour power supply to irrigation pump sets and immediate drought-relief measures.

The Chief Minister has been given a 10-day deadline to meet the farmers’ demands. If the demands are not met, the farmers will file criminal complaints against the management of private sugar mills found violating the state government’s orders on repayment of arrears due to the farmers.
