Karnataka: Govt plans to distribute pulses, sugar or oil instead of of cash/rice under Anna Bhagya scheme

On Tuesday, Food and Civil Supplies Minister K.H. Muniyappa announced that the government is considering distributing pulses, sugar, or cooking oil to Below Poverty Line (BPL) cardholders instead of cash or rice under the Anna Bhagya scheme.

Currently, beneficiaries receive cash under the Anna Bhagya scheme. However, a recent survey indicated that 93 percent of BPL cardholders prefer receiving pulses, sugar, or cooking oil. Muniyappa stated that he will discuss this matter with officials and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Muniyappa, who also met with Union Food Minister Pralhad Joshi, mentioned that Joshi assured him of providing any quantity of rice needed for distribution to the poor.

“The Centre currently provides 5 kg of rice per person under the PM Garib Kalyan Yojana to BPL cardholders. If the state government provides additional rice under Anna Bhagya, it will be too much for beneficiaries,” Muniyappa added.
