Karnataka: Minister asks mills to clear cane dues on time or else face action

Mandya, Karnataka: Sugar factories processing cane supplied by farmers have been directed to clear outstanding payments within 14 days, failing which legal action will be taken, Agriculture Minister N Cheluvarayaswamy stated, reported The Times of India.

Speaking at a meeting with sugar factory representatives and farmers at the Zilla Panchayat on Tuesday, he added, “Regarding cane cutting, factories are charging farmers different rates, and it was announced that a uniform price will be set through meetings in the future.”

Shrirangapatna MLA Ramesh Babu Bandisiddegowda emphasised that under the leadership of the chief minister and legislators, the My Sugar Factory has been revitalised. “There is no question to privatise it,” he asserted.

Deputy Commissioner Kumara directed sugar factories to settle all dues by March 15. Meanwhile, farmer leaders insisted that any delay in payments beyond the 14-day deadline should include interest charges and that legal action must be pursued against defaulting factories.
