Karnataka: Minister asks sugar mill to reduce harvesting and transportation charges

Hubballi, Karnataka: In regards to the charges levied on farmers for harvesting sugarcane and transporting it to the sugar mill, Labor Minister Santosh Lad urged Parry Sugars officials in Haliyal to lower these charges.

He pointed out that the factory had been imposing excessive fees for harvesting and transporting sugarcane, particularly affecting farmers in the Kalaghatagi, Alnavar, and Dharwad rural areas. Currently, the factory is billing Rs 893 per tonne for harvesting and transportation costs.

He said, “Kalaghatagi, Alnavar and Dharwad are located near to Haliyal. But the farmers from these taluks are being forced to pay same charges which are applied to sugarcane fields located at a distance of 110 km from the factory. This is unscientific and should be reduced.”

He called upon the representatives of the sugar mill to devise a new tariff within the next two days, following consultations with senior officials, and to provide written communication of the revised rates to the district administration. Minister Lad also said that he would bring this matter to the attention of the Minister for Sugar. The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad, Gurudutta Hegde, Superintendent of Police Gopal Byakod, and other officials.
