Kalaburagi: Members of the Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS) and the Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers district committee have announced plans to stage a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office on November 5, reported The Hindu.
The protest aims to urge the Union government to revise the sugar recovery rate, facilitate an agreement between sugar factories and farmers, and address outstanding payments for sugarcane supplied to factories in the district.
KPRS district president Sharanabasappa Mamshetty, addressing reporters on Monday, urged the Centre to revise sugar recovery rate from 10.25% to 8.5%. He highlighted that the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane in the 2024-25 season has been set at ₹340 per quintal at a 10.25% recovery rate.
Mamshetty demanded that the FRP be revised to ₹5,000 per tonne, at a sugar recovery rate of 8.5%.
In July, a delegation of sugarcane growers met with the Director of Sugarcane Development and the Commissioner of Sugarcane Development in Bengaluru, urging them to expedite the release of long-overdue payments for sugarcane supplied to various factories. Despite three months passing, neither the district administration nor the factories have responded, Mamshetty noted.
