Mysuru, Karnataka: Sugarcane farmers from Mysuru that had begun their indefinite agitation outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner demanding an increase in the fair at remunerative price (FRP) have called off their agitation after the Deputy Commissioner Bagadi Gautham assured them of convening a meeting of their representatives and sugarcane mill owners on August 17.
According to the news report published in Thehindu.com, DC Gautham told the farmers that soon a meeting of sugarcane mill owners and farmers would be held on August 17 to discuss the demands made by farmers and find a way-out.
As the farmers began their agitation, the Joint Director of Agriculture, Mysuru, Mahantheshappa visited the site and assured the farmers to look into their demands by convening a meeting next week in this regard. The farmers initially refused to call off their agitation but agreed to call off agitation after Deputy Commissioner spoke to farmers’ leader Kurubur Shanthakumar on Mahantheshappa’s mobile and promised to convene a meeting with the sugarcane mill owners and the farmers’ representatives
The farmers are demanding a hike in FRP for the sugarcane crop. Farmers claim that there is a steep hike in input costs due to increase in prices of fertilizers and diesel which has affected them.
