Kazakhstan’s planned new sugar project in Atyrau region aims to meet domestic demand

Goldbridge International is set to establish a sugar factory in the Atyrau region of western Kazakhstan, with an annual production capacity of 144,000 tons. The total investment for the facility is estimated at 58 billion tenge (approximately $112 million), with 80% of the funding coming from a Chinese investor, reported local media.

The project, announced by the Kazakh Agriculture Ministry, is expected to create around 200 new jobs.

The project aims to meet domestic demand for sugar, the ministry said. Around 900,000 tonnes of beet will be needed annually to produce sugar. It will be grown in the Atyrau region, it said.

Construction of the factory is planned for completion by the summer of 2026. Serik Shapkenov, the mayor (akim) of the Atyrau Region, expressed his strong support for the initiative, highlighting that Kazakhstan currently imports majority of its sugar.

“This is a vital project for us. The land in Atyrau is ideal for beet cultivation, and I believe it will not only satisfy domestic demand but also boost our agricultural sector. We are ready to offer all the necessary infrastructure to ensure its success,” said Shapkenov.
