Kenya allows sugarcane import from Uganda

Amid the uproar, finally, the Kenyan government has allowed Ugandan sugarcane farmers to export their produce to Busia Sugar Factory across the border. This comes as a big relief to cane growers in Uganda.

Earlier, there were allegations that local factories in Kenya’s Busia city are involved in the smuggling of sugarcane from Uganda. But, sugar mills refuted the allegations.

Cane growers in Uganda’s Busoga sub-region are stuck with sugarcane due to low demand from millers. Following the excess sugarcane in the region and no taker of it, earlier there were plans to export unprocessed raw materials to neighbouring Kenya. But, Uganda’s government opposed to the proposal of export. And trouble for cane growers mounted. The closure of large sugar mill Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited (SCOUL) and Kakira Sugar for their routine annual maintenance impacted Uganda’s sugarcane farmers.

Now, with the permission of sugarcane export, farmers in Busoga sub-region will be relieved
