Nairobi: After a brief one-year closure, Chemelil sugar mill is all set to start operations on Thursday. The company stopped crushing in March 2019 owing to the financial distress that affected more than 20000 contracted farmers from Nandi and Ksumu regions. It also causes trouble for businesses in the region.
The farmers have welcomed the decision. Richard Ogendo, Kenya Sugarcane Grower Association secretary-general said that the farmers were struggling after the closure of the operations.
The management had assured the farmers that they are working round the clock to restart the operations.
The sugar sector boomed in centres like Chemelil Roundabout, Miwani, Kibigori, Kopere and Awasi during the mill’s operation. The situation worsened after milling was stopped. With the starting of operation, farmers are happy.
