Sugarcane farmers under the leadership of Muhoroni MP Onyango Koyoo and Kenya Sugarcane Growers Association secretary-general Richard Ogendo have demanded strict action against those involved in smuggling sugar in the country.
According to the media report, they have alleged that some companies are involved in the business of illegally importing sugar at a cheap rate from neighbouring countries that is affecting the domestic sugar market. These companies are doing this illegal business posing as normal business, they said.
Koyoo urged the DCI to investigate why companies registered in May and June last year have been allowed to import sugar without following due process.
