Kisumu: The government is responsible for the shortage of sugarcane in the country, said Francis Wangara, secretary general of the Kenya Union of Sugar Plantation and Allied Workers, reports Capitalfm.
He said, “The government has failed to implement recommendations of various sugar task forces regarding the revival of the sugar sector. These reports, like one prepared by former Governor Wycliffe Oparanya during the tenure of former agriculture cabinet secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri, are lying unattended in the government offices at the expense of the tax-payers.”
“We should look at these reports and start implementing recommendations to revive the sugar sector,” he added.
The increase in the number of sugar mills in the country has resulted in the shortage of sugar and the government should take measures to limit their number, said Wangara.
