The figures from the month of May indicate that the sugar from Uganda was most expensive for import.
According to Sugar Directorate data, the cost of sugar imported from Uganda costs Sh64, 420 per tonne. The rate of the same quantity of sugar from Zimbabwe is Sh59, 279, Egypt Sh61, 842 and Mauritius Sh59, 342. The cheapest sugar was from Swaziland which was at Sh54,209 per tonne.
Following the rise in sugar prices from Uganda, the traders from Kenya are opting to import sugar from Egypt.
Kenya usually relies on sugar imports due to the high cost of sugar production in the country.
