The influence of politicians has led to the collapse of the sugar sector of Kenya, said John Bunyasi, MP from Nambale. He alleged that the funds earned through the trade of importing illegal sugar and selling it in the domestic market were used for political campaigns consistently.
Speaking to a local television channel he said, “The sugar sector was the economic pillar of Western Kenya and it’s difficult to revive it. The sector is facing many challenges including the market related as well as others including political power brokers who have financed the political campaigns from the money they earned through illegal sugar import.”
“Mumias Sugar that was producing 60% of the sugar Kenya needed is in loss due to bad governance,” he said.
