The sugarcane cultivators from Busia and the cane millers have opposed the demand of Kenya Sugar Manufacturers Association of lifting the ban on sugarcane import.
The Chairman of the Association had requested Agriculture CS Peter Munya to lift the ban citing sugar mills are facing low sugarcane supply.
Patel in a letter sent to the Agriculture CS on August 4 stated that the millers are facing cane supply issues to run with full capacity and the government should lift the sugarcane import ban.
However, the sugarcane farmers have opposed the demand. They claim that this was a well-orchestrated move to kill local sugarcane production.
According to the media report, Olepito Sugar Company general manager Gerald Okoth criticised Patel, saying the association members were not consulted and don’t support the lifting of the ban.
