Kerala: SupplyCo increases price of sugar as Onam approaches

With the onset of the Onam festival, Supplyco has raised the prices of subsidized goods. The cost of essential items like rice, pulses, and sugar has increased. Specifically, the price of kuruva rice has risen by Rs 3, from Rs 30 to Rs 33 per kg. Similarly, the prices of matta rice and pachari have also gone up by Rs 3.

The Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited, abbreviated as and known better by its brand name Supplyco, is a Government of Kerala-owned company headquartered at Kochi, India.

As per local media reports, Sambar parippu has seen a price increase from Rs 111 to Rs 115, while sugar has experienced a significant hike, rising by Rs 6 from Rs 27 to Rs 33 per kilo. On the other hand, the prices of coconut oil and green gram have decreased.

Minister G R Anil stated that this is the first nominal price increase in seven years. He described the adjustment as a response to the rise in market prices. Despite the increases, he assured that Supplyco’s prices remain 30 percent lower than the general market rates. He emphasized that the price adjustments are intended to maintain Supplyco’s operations.

The Onam markets managed by Supplyco will commence today, with the government allocating 225 crore for market intervention, of which 150 crore has already been disbursed. This allocation aims to ensure the availability of subsidized goods, which were previously scarce.

Special promotions have also been introduced for customers. The highlight is the Sabari Signature Kit, which includes six Sabari products valued at Rs 255, now available for Rs 189. Additionally, deep discount hours will feature a buy-one-get-one offer on top branded products, providing an extra discount of up to 10 percent.
