Kharif sowing affected due to the slow progress of the monsoon

Sugarcane and other Kharif crops cultivation has been affected this season due to the slow progress of monsoon, reports Financial Express.

As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the cumulative monsoon across the country during June 1-13 has been 47% less than the longer period average (LPA).

The sowing activities have been affected due to delays in rainfall. However most of the farmers cultivate sugarcane in May, the average area under Kharif cultivation is marginally higher this year compared to that of last year so far. This is despite the decline in the sowing of rice, pulses and oilseeds by 14.6%, 57.2% and 14.4% respectively.
