Karad: Flood in Pune, Sangli, Satara, Solapur and Kolhapur districts, the sugar belt of Maharashtra, have majorly hit the sugarcane farmers. Farmers had earlier alleged that sugar mills in their region refused to take flood affected sugarcane.
In an attempt to give relief to sugarcane farmers from Karad and Walva taluka, Krishna Cooperative sugar mill has given priority to crush around 634 hectares of sugarcane in flood-affected areas. According to the reports, the mill has already crushed 570 hectares of flood-affected area and the remaining 64 hectares of sugarcane will be harvested by the end of February.
Similarly, cane growers from Kolhapur are struggling as their flood-hit damaged sugarcane crop is still standing in the field. Recently, Kolhapur District collector Daulat Desai has convened the meeting of the sugar millers and asked them to refrain from procuring sugarcane from neighbouring states until they complete crushing of damaged crop from the district.
