Padrauna: Kushinagar MP demanded the reopening of the closed sugar mills in Lakshmiganj and Kathkuiyan on Thursday. He stated that if the malfunctioning machines in these sugar mills are replaced with state-of-the-art machines, the sugarcane farmers of the district would not have to sell their sugarcane to mills in other districts, reports Amar Ujala.
MP Vijay Kumar Dubey said that farmers in Kushinagar district cultivate sugarcane on over one lakh hectares of land. Approximately 95 per cent of the farmers in the district depend on sugarcane farming for their income. They use the proceeds from selling sugarcane to cover children’s education, daughters’ marriages, and other expenses. Due to the closure of sugar mills in the district, farmers have to sell their sugarcane to mills in Pipraich, Maharajganj, and neighbouring state Bihar, incurring high transportation costs.
Dubey emphasized that if the defunct machines in the closed sugar mills of Lakshmiganj and Kathkuian are replaced with modern ones, these mills can be operational again. This would not only make it easier for farmers to sell their sugarcane but also promote the development of nearby areas and provide employment to local youth. The MP also mentioned integrating the Dhaha sugar mill with an ethanol plant.
