Gola Gokaran Nath (Uttar Pradesh): Sugarcane farmers have demanded the state government to increase sugarcane price to Rs 500 per quintal before the start of the crushing season. They also threatened to block the operations of sugar mills if their demands were not met, reported Amar Ujala.
The demand was made at a monthly meeting of the Rashtriya Kisan Shakti Sangathan (RKSS), a farmers’ organisation. The meeting was held at the Cooperative Sugarcane Development Committee premises.
Patel Krishna Verma, the state president of RKSS, said that the sugarcane farmers of the district have not yet been paid by the Bajaj Hindustan Sugar Limited, which operates two sugar mills in the district. He warned that the sugar mills would not be allowed to start operations if the payment was not made.
Ram Singh Verma, a farmer leader, said that the farmers should instead organize themselves and surround the sugar mills in large numbers. He said that only this would force the sugar mills to pay the sugarcane farmers.
