Lakhimpur Kheri: Red rot disease threatens sugarcane crops in Pasgawan block

Chapartala, Lakhimpur Kheri: The red rot disease has quickly spread in the sugarcane crops, thereby causing a crisis among farmers within the Pasgawan block. This is a fungal disease that has substantially damaged the crop, affecting farmers who depend mainly on growing sugarcane as their economic activity, reports Live Hindustan.

In Pasgawan’s rural areas, where sugarcane is a major cash crop, farmers have historically achieved high yields and earned accolades at both the district and state levels. However, the onset of this devastating disease has now put their livelihoods at risk.

According to farmers, Red Rot is a soil- and seed-borne fungal disease that acts like cancer. The first symptoms of the attack include growing roots from the sugarcane stems, turning leaves yellow, and drying of stalks.

The agricultural scientist Dr Mohammad Sohail said that though there is no permanent cure for the disease of Red Rot, timely intervention can help to stem its spread.

He appealed to the farmers to take necessary precautionary measures before the disease spreads.
